New White Paper Guides Businesses as They Grapple With the Complex Cloud Computing Landscape
LONDON, Sept. 29, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Cartesian, a TMNG Global company, today announced a new white paper entitled "The Challenges of Enterprise Cloud Migration: Successfully Navigating a Bewildering Landscape" (www.cartesian.com/cloud-migration). The paper defines the need for a disciplined approach to Cloud migration which includes an operational roadmap, a framework of requirements and best practices, and a solid financial model.
According to Cartesian, many IT projects fail because of poorly understood requirements, lack of systematic planning and inadequate business cases. But in reality, these factors are symptoms of a more fundamental core issue, namely that migrating an existing enterprise IT application to a new environment, e.g. the Cloud, is a specialised business activity that is difficult to execute unless you have significant experience and use a disciplined approach.
Commenting on Cloud migration, Rich Nespola, Chairman and CEO of TMNG Global said:
"The sheer complexity of the decision to move to the Cloud, and of the migration itself, amplifies the critical imperative to get the requirements right up front. Executives in charge of designing their company's Cloud strategy need to clearly define the applications that should move to the Cloud based upon their business goals and potential opportunities, identify the best practices that should guide their migration process, and evaluate the wide array of Cloud service providers to find the most appropriate partner."
The establishment of an operational roadmap is critical to a successful Cloud migration, says Cartesian. The development of such a roadmap should be constructed by experts with in-depth operational experience with IT migrations and should include:
- A holistic set of predefined requirements for the business, technical and operational areas that will be impacted by the migration.
- An automated tool that substantially eases the process of constructing RFIs/RFPs and permits unbiased scoring of vendor responses.
- Expert guidance to motivate involvement across all impacted business units.
Bill Opet, SVP, Cable, Broadband and Cloud Business Unit of TMNG Global added:
"A necessary companion to the operational roadmap is a comprehensive financial model that identifies the costs and benefits of a move to the Cloud. Enterprises need to thoroughly quantify all elements relating to the planning, migration and ongoing support for the applications they are moving to the Cloud."
The launch of "The Challenges of Enterprise Cloud Migration" white paper is fourth in a series of Cloud initiatives that Cartesian has announced in 2011. The company helps clients evaluate and manage the complexities of Cloud enablement.
